The Safest Neighborhoods in America: A Look At Two Contributing Factors

What keeps a neighborhood or city safe? Everyone wants to live in a place with a low crime rate and few home intrusions, but what does it take for a community to become “safe” from criminals?

This is a difficult question, of course. However, in our research, we have discovered two factors that can greatly influence the quality of a city and the safety of its occupants

1. Cities With a “Sense of Community”

The #1 rated “safest city” in the United states has been noted as having a very specific design, and an associated lower level of crime.

How is this possible?

Specifically, the city was planned around and designed to have a strong sense of community. There are numerous common spaces where people can interact, and townships and commercial centers divide the city into various “residential villages” that give everyone a place to belong.

What city is rated #1? Irvine, California.

According to a recent article published by Business Insider, “Irvine's design might also play into the low crime rate. The city is divided into a number of planned residential villages, some featuring schools and resort-style recreation like pools within the village boundaries.”

About Irvine, California: What’s The Big Deal?

After surveying all the cities within the United States with a population of over 200,000, analysts discovered that Irvine, California was the top “safest city” within the United States of America. Irvine was a city planned and developed in the early 1960s by the Irvine Company.

Irvine, California received such a high ranking for the following reasons:

  • Numerous common spaces, townships with commercial centers, churches and schools

  • The city’s unique design reinforces community development and integration

  • They have a prosperous upper-middle class city

  • The population is educated

  • Only 110 reported instances of violent crime in 2012

  • They have a high police officer to population ratio as well as a low murder rate

2. Cities With a Large Number of Homes Equipped with Home Security Systems

According to statistics, homes without a home security system are three times more likely to be chosen as the target of a break in by a burglar. Neighborhoods where a large number or all of the homes are equipped with home security systems are going to, collectively, be a strong deterrent.

Burglars understand the probability that they will trigger the home security system. When the majority or all of the homes within a neighborhood are equipped with a home security system, instead of moving onto the house next door, the thieves tend to move to an entirely different neighborhood.

The Home Security System Industry Will Grow to $34,46 billion by 2017

According to US News on September 9, 2013, “Overall, Americans spent about $20.64 billion on home security systems in 2011. These are the most recent figures available, according to the business research firm, Markets and Markets. The industry is expected to continue to grow to $34.46 billion by 2017.”

With over 2 million home burglaries occurring each year, more and more people have decided that it’s not worth taking the chance. This is why home security systems are becoming more and more popular.
